Review on High-Performance Synology DS220j Diskless 2-Bay NAS DiskStation with 512MB DDR4 Memory by Aaron Leburu

Revainrating 5 out of 5

220J and 420J Very fast, easy to set up, reliable and quiet

Because Revain is bundling the 220J and 420J together I can't look at 420J in isolation so I am revising my 220J review to include 420J. I got the 420j 15 months after the 220j and as expected the 420j is excellent too. In fact I got a great discount of 420J from Revain warehouse for returned items indistinguishable from new packaging. I use Synology 220J and 420j in a very simple way to set them as destination for downloading torrent files and backups. , and storing other large files I don't want to take up space on my SSD. Windows 10 PC connected to 1G LAN. Both NAS are directly connected to the 1G port of the Netgear r6700V3 router. So far I've used a wired (non-wireless) connection to both NAS very quickly, even approaching the data limit of the 1G Ethernet interface. Check out the attached chart showing the speed test of both NAS from my laptop to each of the Synology devices. Really very fast with the maximum network capacity of 1 Gbps. THE GOOD: - EASY INSTALLATION: Little more to do than install the hard drives, let the devices do their initial setup, then set up the shared folder and was able to quickly see the NAS from my two Windows 10 laptops. Very little needs to be done to start using the NAS. FAST TORRENT SAVE: Save torrent files over a wired Ethernet connection at a speed equal to the fastest torrent download. Very satisfied. GOOD STREAMING: I was able to play 4K videos from 220J over 1G LAN on NVIDIA Shield with great results. No pauses or stutters. 220j and 1G LAN did not load at all. -- GOOD SUPPORT: I was impressed with the technical support. They were always available and knowledgeable enough but couldn't explain the reason for the slow flows. - QUIET: The fan on both units is surprisingly quiet and has an adjustable speed. - FAST FILE TRANSFER: When I copy a file from the PC (where I saved the torrent file) to a file, it's very fast. I'm seeing speeds of 115 Mbps on a 1G LAN. See attached speed test for both devices. -- VERY RELIABLE: In 15 months of usage, the 220j NAS was available 100% of the time, connected to the network and working through the web interface. I've only had the 420j for a week, but I expect the same great reliability from it. -- BE CAREFUL WHEN CHOOSING YOUR HARD DRIVES: I'm only saying this because I originally installed some cheap 4TB Hitachi drives that turned out to be pretty damn noisy. When the heads moved they made a loud pop, so loud I had to move the 220j to another room where I couldn't hear it. -- SILENT HARD DRIVES: For the 420J I used 4ea Seagate Barracuda 4TB hard drives and I can't hear them at all. In fact, the fan is louder than any noise the drives make. Bad: nothing. CONCLUSION: Both the 420j and 220j can do many things and are probably a lot more complicated than I need and for the simple task of saving files from my PC over LAN, but this is a very easy to set up and extremely reliable solution.
