Project: Portable GPS Device

06/19/2021 *** Please note this listing has been updated for another tablet and this review no longer matches the device being sold. I bought this tablet with the intention of using it as an Android Auto-like portable device that I can move between two cars, one a horribly outdated factory navigation from 2011 with no additional updates (Mercedes Benz NTG3.5) and the other even simpler, has nothing at all. What drew me to this product are the features including 8 cores, SIM card support and GPS chip. All of this is very important for acceptable use as a navigation device. You don't want to miss a direction due to lag in location updates, screen rendering, or enough CPU power to update all three in parallel. Using CPU-Z, I gathered some of the hardware specs for my device and included them with this review as the seller's listing was missing the smallest detail. Take this with a grain of salt as hardware sometimes differs between versions of the same product, as evidenced by the clock speed discrepancy between the listing and the actual (best) one. So to the tablet itself. The build quality is good, no problems so far. I tested the navigation experience on Google Maps yesterday and the user experience, tracking and directions were flawless. I haven't received my SIM (Google Fi) and size adapter kit (Nano standard) yet, so I can't comment on the support there yet. I will update this review later with these details. The general UI navigation (the device itself, not the car) is still responsive and fluid. Opening Google's built-in apps isn't too late, but not on par with other modern tablets like Samsung devices (which cost considerably more). Youtube videos played smoothly and there was no audio interruption when switching between standard and full screen modes. I have 100/100 internet from Fios and the tablet's WiFi was able to max it out both ways with a ping response time of 13ms on a 5GHz connection to my router - great results. I won't be using this for gaming and won't go long without a charger so I can't help you. Overall I'm very happy with the value for money. I hope to update this soon. Update 02/17/2021: I received my sim card with google fi data and after a lot of trial and error I was able to get it working. First, DO NOT install the Google Fi app as it will treat the tablet as a phone and will attempt/fail to activate the device. It also blocks APN setting page from being displayed on cellular network. The APN (Access Point Names) settings page had a bunch of entries for Google Fi - tm (t-mobile I think). Ignore the default APN entries. I couldn't get the map to work until I ONLY created an APN with the Google Fi name and the same APN value as h2g2. Don't touch anything else, save the recording and go. It was in SIM slot #2, but I don't expect slot #1 to be any different. I will also point out that you are on a 4G T-Mobile network in case that isn't obvious. Update 06/09/2021: I have now used it on many road trips and several hikes in the forest. Both the GPS and the device in general work great for my specific purposes - no issues at all. I put a standard matte screensaver (film type) on the screen to reduce reflections while driving. This worked great, but it also turned out that the screen brightness could have been better. At full brightness with a matte film, the screen is barely visible in bright light (outdoors). I may have to find another matte film that doesn't darken it as much.
