The close crossing with an approaching ship on the exit side of the shipping lanes (and a mile wrong way at that) reminded me that knowing where you are is not enough. there are, and it is assumed, that ships will stay on their designated routes. Not only do you need to see them clearly from a distance, you also need an accurate bearing to determine the course of a potential collision. It was this incident that led to my decision to purchase this protective gear immediately. When I took these glasses out of the box I was very impressed, they look and feel solid and quality - from the optics (clarity is amazing) and fitting to the case that comes with it (soft, durable clasp, orange piping for better visibility). Perhaps the feature that allows the Celestron Oceana to go toe-to-toe with much more expensive models is the quality of its built-in bearing compass. Liquid moisture is essential to life in the sea, without it the compass is practically useless. Also, I checked its accuracy with the fluxgate compass built into my GPS and it's definitely on. And the backlight is perfect, the compass can be read to the nearest degree, day or night. It was a bit difficult for me to see the compass at a glance, but I quickly found that the rubber eyecups and my nose were getting in the way of the lenses being a little higher than I would have liked. Very light downward pressure corrects their position. Overall I am very happy with the purchase and with Celestron's lifetime warranty I am sure I will be using them for years to come.
