You can also use a screwdriver to poke a wall

This item is unusable. You can stick a screwdriver in the wall to find the studs with the same success. No matter what settings you use, they will give zero or false readings on anything other than a perfect wall of 1/2 thick drywall and pristine putty. If you have any violations, forget it. It also responds to the pressure you put on it during the scan. Forget it.
