Review on πŸ”§ Optimized Velleman VTDESOL3U Vacuum Desoldering Pump with Built-In 30W Heater by Matthew Evans

Gets more dangerous the longer you use it

I used this for desoldering keyboard switches. After 15 minutes as I primed the pump a drop of solder flew out of the tip (see picture). The solder probably got into the nozzle and melted. After about 30 minutes of use, the plastic protector became very hot. It didn't melt, but it was too hot to touch. The suction power decreases after a few uses. I've found that raising the tip up while priming and turning on the pump can clear solder stuck in the tube. This is probably a good idea after 2 or 3 joints. It also helps reduce foreign object kickback when vacuuming. But after about 30 fugues, the debris is still falling out. It seems to be missing a one-way valve to prevent solder from falling out. I have mixed feelings about this desoldering pump. It's a good idea, but poor execution. Very questionable and potentially dangerous for long desoldering sessions. Disassembly is of course dangerous, take the usual precautions. Still, I don't think it's an unsafe device, just not as reliable as using a pump and iron separately. It has its place and is ideal in a pinch.

Pros
  • Comfortable
Cons
  • Easily torn
