Use with care on hardwood such as hickory. I tried moving the base down but to make it short enough you have to be on the edges of the helix and it wobbles a lot. After a few cuts in the wood and, of course, a click, I realized that this wasn't true. Demolished it in the end and left the bat buried in the wood. Now I have to try and find a harder bit and drill this thing out without making the hole any bigger. Ryobi makes a set that has almost no drill to break. They'll probably work well on wood like pine or spruce. But don't use them for anything hard.
