Use with care on hardwood such as hickory. I tried moving the base down but to make it short enough you have to be on the edges of the helix and it wobbles a lot. After a few cuts in the wood and, of course, a click, I realized that this wasn't true. Demolished it in the end and left the bat buried in the wood. Now I have to try and find a harder bit and drill this thing out without making the hole any bigger. Ryobi makes a set that has almost no drill to break. They'll probably work well on…
I used the longest countersink for about half an hour before it broke like cheap plastic. I drilled holes in 2x4 and 2x6 for a backyard garden planter so it wasn't exactly industrial use. For reference, I used my DeWalt 20V MAX cordless drill (DCD985B) on the lowest setting (1) to drill holes directly into the wood. Luckily I was able to finish the job with a medium countersink and it didn't break - at least not yet. I'm usually amazed at the quality and durability of DeWalt tools. This is my…
I bought these countersinks despite at least one review mentioning that they are not straight. I thought a company like DeWalt would solve this problem. Not correct! The two bits I received vibrated heavily and one was acceptable. I tried returning them but Revane said they were non-refundable. Apparently the quick-change function on the bit shank is not set directly. Good Chinese quality control. I decided to use a hacksaw and cut off the quick coupler on all three. Now the bits spin easily…
Countersink #8 broke while drilling the third hole in a 1" x 6" piece of Douglas fir. I had to use Vise-Grip pliers to remove the drill bit. A conical screw bit design pulls the countersink into the wood at an uncontrolled rate, and the momentum created when the bit hits the wood shears the bit. Quick-change hex shank. If a conventional twist drill was used, as is common with other countersink drill sets, this would probably never have happened. I've used a relatively inexpensive set of 4…
At first I was very happy with this set. I tried to save money by buying an adjustable set instead of fixed length countersinks. I've used #6 and #8 to sink about 100 holes for several projects I've built over the past few months. However, for the first few projects I used the same size screws so I didn't really have to adjust the countersunk collet. When I had to make adjustments for different length carriages, my problems started. The lag screw requires considerable force to stay in place…
Pros
Drilling, countersinking and countersinking in one go
Works well until it fails. I bought this set of countersinks and several boxes of screws. The conical drill works well. It cuts very well through composite deck boats and wood. This leaves a nice countersink and loves the fact that the pre-drilled hole isn't the same diameter. I think the screw bites better. But there is a SERIOUS flaw in the design of this tool. The round drill is installed with KLEBER in a 1/4 hexagon shank. The glue fails after using the drill for a long time and heats up…
I have used DeWalt dies for many years. On my last set, the bits broke under moderately heavy use. I assumed it was my fault. Now I'm not so sure. My last purchase about a week ago contained defective bits. Swings #6 and #8. #6 broke after a few uses. Apparently there is a mistake in pressing the drill into the 1/4" sleeve. If you've ever been exposed to the Chinese sales and marketing mentality, then you know that the shipping container is the smallest unit they sell and put in ship to the…
