Cut the strap that holds the shock absorber in compressed condition. Allow it to stretch to its full length. Then position the shock absorber vertically as for installation. Fully compress the shock and allow it to stretch to its full length. Repeat the process 5 or 6 times to make sure the juices are flowing and the damper isn't dead (sometimes this happens with new dampers). After that it works as intended at the first bump in the road. Our newly bought Jeep had 205,000 miles on the clock and had original shock absorbers on all four wheels. Of course, they were completely dead. Driving performance was restored immediately.
