These connectors are of the 4P4C type which means they have 4 width positions and 4 connection points. They do not work like regular 6P4C phone jacks (wider but same 4 jacks) and due to their smaller width they will not work with most RJ11 connectors and adapters. They are typically used to connect a handset to a base station. They are also used to connect other non-phone devices. My keyboard gate opener uses this style so it helped me make a new cable that was damaged.
