When I hear about the Prang brand, I think of painting supplies for children. However, this is not the case with these charcoal pencils. I'm an artist over 60 and I just love them. I generally prefer paper-wrapped charcoal because it's very difficult to sharpen charcoal with a knife when working on one piece. Forget sharpening a charcoal in a pencil sharpener as these will break a million times before you get a good point, if you get one at all. If a charcoal stick falls on the ground and breaks, it's impossible to sharpen it without bits of charcoal flying out of the stick and you have to try and sharpen it again, repeating the same thing over and over again. Pencils wrapped in paper are becoming increasingly difficult to find these days. All I can think of is Prang and one other company, and I far prefer Prang. I still have some old paper-wrapped Berol charcoal pencils and I still prefer Prang because it's really nice to work with. Prang's soft charcoal pencils leave a rich, soft black mark. This charcoal is a much darker and richer black than other charcoal pencils I've used; wrapped in paper and sharpened with a knife. Charcoal also feels more comfortable when used, unlike other brands which feel harder and tougher and don't seem as smooth when marking. or sanguine pastels as well as Cretacolor Sepia or sanguine powder. It's a good idea to use charcoal powder with these pens. I also use them with Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils and Cretacolor Nero Pencils. They're so cheap that I don't feel bad about paying big bucks for art supplies when the artwork I create ends up being junk, but the quality is great, so I'm proud of a well-done artwork made with the Prang charcoals and I had no negative comments about the materials used in the charcoal drawings I showed. More important; I as an artist am the one who should be happy with the quality of these charcoal pencils and the results I've gotten from them. And me! At this price point, Prang charcoal pencils are ideal for children, budding young artists, art students and seasoned older artists like myself. And the quality is so remarkable that they will appeal to beginners, amateurs and professionals alike. Be sure to spray the fixer onto your finished artwork outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Children's drawings and quick study sketches that you don't want to keep or don't care about can be sprayed with hairspray instead of more expensive fixative. The only difference is that hairspray will yellow over time and paper can age faster. But for something you don't want to keep or sell forever, hairspray will do. I use hairspray for the gestures I make on newspaper when I go to stick figure class just to keep the charcoal from getting on other things in my briefcase or in my storage tube when I'm transporting them home. I adore her!
