May have killed my new 5800x

I can't say for sure but I'm going with all the evidence I've gathered. I've been building a new computer since I could get my hands on the 5800x. I installed this by following all the instructions and even watching some YouTube videos on how to install it. Installation was fairly easy as with the AM4 connector all you had to do was remove the standard brackets and reuse the existing backplate. So I used small plastic braces, screwed in the metal cross braces, attached the heatsink, and alternately screwed the heatsink all the way in (assuming the springs and screw placement prevent over-tightening). The YouTuber contacted Scythe when I commented on his videos about my issues and they said they couldn't be dragged. However if you look at my photo I think something was not done right. The corner of the heatsink was so tight it left a groove in the CPU shroud for my fingernail to get caught in, and the stamp on the CPU shroud left a nice mark right next to it. He also marked the top of the CPU cover with a circle in the middle. I've never had a heatsink leave visible damage to a CPU shroud and vice versa. Everything was working fine for almost 1 month, and then when I was on the Windows desktop my computer suddenly went blank. I tried to run back and was greeted with a "-" in the top corner. My computer wouldn't boot, sometimes I got into the bios, but that's all I could do. My new MSI Tomahawk motherboard gave a VGA error. So I installed a replacement video card and it still gave this error. So I bought a new motherboard (same model), swapped everything out, but there was still a VGA error, so it wasn't the motherboard. I've tried everything: 2 power supplies, 4 RAM sticks and so on. The only thing I couldn't test was the CPU because it was my first AMD build in a very long time, so I didn't have any spare CPUs. So a bad processor. Good luck finding one in stock and I didn't want to try and get AMD's warranty as I need a working computer so I sent everything back and went with Intel and a different brand cooler. Did the Scythe heatsink crash my processor? I can't be sure, but I've never had a CPU just die. I'm sure some people will disagree with me, but we all can have different opinions and experiences.

Pros
  • Positive only
Cons
  • Cable shorter than others
