Pleasantly surprised!

The first thing I noticed was that the camera and accessories were packaged very well. Although the box looked a bit worn, the contents inside were perfectly fine. Nothing broken, dented, scratched or used. The second thing that struck me when I unpacked everything was the solid construction. 304 stainless steel with seamless seams. The pot and pillar appear to be well made, heavy and look like they will last a while. There were gaskets around all the seals and when properly sealed they provided a good seal. The clasps fit well and are easy to put on. This device has everything you need to get started. Areometer, submersible water pump, teflon tape, digital thermometer, pot and columns with copper tubes. I noticed a few things that weren't a problem, but I thought it was important to mention. The first is a hydrometer. A hydrometer is used to test ABV and there are 3 in this kit. The first range is 0 to 40, the second is 40 to 70 and the third is 70 to 100. They are small and the neck appears to be fragile (made of thin glass ), so be careful when handling them. I would recommend taking them from the bottom (where the weights are) to avoid putting unnecessary stress on the stems. The second thing that caught my eye is the submersible water pump. Be sure to wrap the threads with plenty of Teflon tape. This is a trick to make it work properly without water leaking from the threaded part. I also noticed that the separator (the grate that goes into the pot) isn't 304 stainless steel, which doesn't bother me too much since it's just a separator. I would like to mention that in any case. An airtight seal is crucial for distillation. This device creates an airtight seal, but it's a little tricky as you don't have a really good way of checking that seal has been made. I came up with a little trick that will show you if your print is good every time. Here's the trick: 1. Center the lid on the top of the pan, making sure the gasket is even against the rim of the pan.2. Place an airlock (with water) in the opening of the cover3. Close the lid by clipping it with the clip provided in the kit.4. When closing the pit, pay attention to the water level in the lock. If you close the lid and the water level doesn't move, you do NOT have an airtight seal. BUT, if you close the lid and the water level shifts (one side is higher than the other) then YOU have an airtight seal. Finally, this device does not come with detailed setup instructions. There is a leaflet with general information (with a diagram of a fully assembled unit) and some FAQs. Luckily that was enough as this device is very easy to assemble. All in all I still like it. I think it's great for beginners and hobbyists. It's well made and multifunctional as it can be used as a stainless steel bucket with an airtight lid, a fermenter (for mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, kimchi, chili) with a stopper and sluice provided and much more. Of course it can also be used as a still.

Pros
  • Not cheap, but decent
Cons
  • Nothing
