I went on a day trip and on the way back Garmin pulled me off the interstate a good 50 miles early. Being new to driving and unfamiliar with the roads I had no choice but to follow a Garmin which made our drive back as tiring as possible. As soon as I got home I changed all the settings, shortest, fastest etc and nothing could show the easiest and fastest route. From the next ride on, I had to do my homework before every ride, otherwise Garmin would take me on the toughest trail. But I fell into the trap again, for the drive to the airport I had to leave the highway just before the toll road and let myself drive for half an hour on the busiest road and then got back on the highway. Luckily we left well in advance anticipating traffic jams so we didn't miss our flight. I researched why this is happening and found out that someone already coined Garmin's term "Freeway Avoidance Syndrome" and the issue is still relevant after reporting it a few years ago! It's fine for short trips though and works very well I have to plan something extra for long journeys so that I don't fall into the Garmin trap of avoiding the freeway.
