Good alarm clock, suitable for portable GPS

I bought this GPS for a trip from Tennessee to Michigan last year. Everything went well on the trip. On the way back, I hit a bump in the road and dropped the device. He got out of line and started telling me I was lost and had to get out and turn around. In a way I'm glad it was starting to work because I started to fall asleep and the GPS commands kept me hyper awake and alert. However, I needed the GPS to work as described and not as an alarm clock. I have since found this device to be…

Beware of Highway Avoidance Syndrome

I went on a day trip and on the way back Garmin pulled me off the interstate a good 50 miles early. Being new to driving and unfamiliar with the roads I had no choice but to follow a Garmin which made our drive back as tiring as possible. As soon as I got home I changed all the settings, shortest, fastest etc and nothing could show the easiest and fastest route. From the next ride on, I had to do my homework before every ride, otherwise Garmin would take me on the toughest trail. But I fell…

Excellent price

I used to only buy Garmins and now several different models. The previous device I bought in early 2012 was a lifetime card and plug model. I will never buy LMT again. The Traffic feature is a joke (very limited coverage areas, always wrong as information quickly becomes outdated and you have to put up with on-screen ads), as is the Lifetime Maps feature. Garmin intentionally only puts the amount of memory into the device required at manufacture and does not increase it slightly to accommodate…

Pros
  • Same as everything

Ease of use, but problems with mapping

Garmin Nuvi 40 One-week test: The software seems more versatile and easier to use than the Magellan Maestro replacement base by default. (Example: User can enter a destination using coordinates.) Also, the mount is easier to use. The map's points of interest (POIs) were quickly showing as three years out of date (the local Wal-Mart and associated streets were not showing). I have exchanged several emails with Customer Service (CS) (they were responsive and clear but no weekend support)…

Comments and Comparison Garmin

6/25/14 -- My Garmin Nuvi 40 came with minimal instructions, and the online manual didn't help at all. (Customer responses were more helpful.) Once you get into the device, the setup is very user-friendly, but it wasn't fun to get there. (1) How is the device charged? It only comes with a car charger, but my car cigarette lighter broke so I bought an IGO universal home charger to charge it fully, which should take two hours. For insurance on the go I have an IGO charger with an A32 tip that…

Great product - just don't try to update maps

This turned out to be a great little GPS. I bought one to replace my old Garmin road pilot that was performing. I liked it and it was so cheap I bought a second one for my wife's car. A great product for less than a hundred euros. At first I thought I'd skip the GPS altogether and just rely on my phone, but I'm glad I got it. It's very easy to use, still gets a good signal, very accurate. So why not 5 stars? A few points: 1) There is no kit for mounting on the dash. Just a suction cup to attach

Pros
  • Portable GPS
Cons
  • Available in white only
