Ease of use, but problems with mapping

Garmin Nuvi 40 One-week test: The software seems more versatile and easier to use than the Magellan Maestro replacement base by default. (Example: User can enter a destination using coordinates.) Also, the mount is easier to use. The map's points of interest (POIs) were quickly showing as three years out of date (the local Wal-Mart and associated streets were not showing). I have exchanged several emails with Customer Service (CS) (they were responsive and clear but no weekend support). Customer has ninety (90) days after first use to receive a free map update. [This was not stated in the documentation in the box.] The user must have (or buy/borrow) a USB cable with a suitable connector - this is not supplied. [Garmin believes most people have the cable they need. If so, why does Garmin ship a cable with devices that come with lifetime map updates?] The device's power plug is also used to access the computer. online, create a Garmin account, register the device and the map update will appear as an option [none of this was in the literature]. I found this process easy enough to understand/perform [I'm not a 'techie' but my use of computers predates the mouse]. There was an error in the Garmin registration process (where you enter your country) but a call to CS resolved the issue and a representative. stuck to the remaining levels (some of them were not obvious/intuitive). Note: The final download took approximately two (2) hours [on a DSL 6G connection]. The computer must remain active during this time (you can leave and come back when the process is complete). After all that, the local Wal-Mart is still not at the POI. This was the only breakpoint set before loading, so I have to assume the display was updated. Conclusion: The software is versatile and user-friendly. The adjustment after initial trouble seems to be completed. Packaged literature is almost useless. A USB cable with a suitable plug is required but is not included in the scope of delivery. Customer service is excellent.
