For almost five years we have had two simple human type J bag trash cans. It is the same trash can, one for general trash and one for recycling. Plastic trash can liners equipped with a J-type pouch have saved the floor more than we can count. Our family has a "trash crush" approach to trash, and when the bag comes out full, it's REALLY full. These bags are just as strong as kitchen waste bags, and while they fit snugly inside the liner, they almost always have room at the top to help with the drawstring. When investing in trash cans, you really want to use dedicated bags when you can. We went with a box of 100 because it's cheaper per bag and the bins look like they'll last another five years with no problems. There are many things in life that you need to keep an eye on on a day to day basis and buying bin bags shouldn't be one of them.
