I used to have panic attacks which I first controlled with Ativan and then switched to Inositol (a vitamin needed for serotonin synthesis). Eventually the panic attacks seemed to go away and I stopped taking inositol as well. That worked for quite a while. But recently my doctor had to stop my medication for a short time. During this time, my panic attacks returned, albeit in a very mild form. Basically, I found myself tensing up and breathing like I was working out. It was easy to control them by just lying down and relaxing. However, I am persistent. I tried adding inositol again but it didn't seem to have any effect. After a few days it looked like the problem was getting worse. So, a little reading: Tryptophan is a precursor amino acid that converts to serotonin. The main organs that produce serotonin are 1) the gut and 2) the brain. In fact, the gut produces more serotonin than the brain. Almost all protein sources contain sufficient tryptophan, and turkey tops the list. However, getting tryptophan into the brain is a problem. There is a special transport protein that I call the train to the brain. The problem is that tryptophan is the slowest to digest. When you eat a high-protein food (turkey), all the other amino acids from the meat build up faster and the tripe never gets on board. In addition, the uptake of tryptophan is increased when the body releases insulin. Therefore, the best way to get tryptophan is to eat vegan foods with vegetables naturally rich in tripophane (chickpeas or these capsules) and some carbs. very high. For this to work, you should probably buy tripe in bulk and spoon into the meat until you get a similar sized mound. And yes, supplements work. They conducted a clinical study using a vegan diet strategy and found an improvement in symptoms. After about three small vegan meals with crackers and a little inositol, my panic attacks subsided. It didn't work if I only did one or the other. Then I just tried adding trif plus inositol along with my late night snack and they didn't come back. After a while my doctor gave me the meds back, but I continue to take Trif because it's clear I'm not getting much. brain only through diet.
