Wrap them in Veterinary Bird Safety Tape

I have one large and two small of these rope poles for my budgie who now has a broken leg. He needs a way to climb more as his landing skills aren't that great and I wanted to create a softer surface for his good leg as it's taking most of the load now. I placed two smaller rope poles in a semicircle around his food and water bowls so he has a comfortable perch/seat for eating and drinking. A long rope rod runs from the bottom of the left side of the cage to the top of the right side, and it's not a small cage. He also has some wooden poles and a few platforms to choose from. I often see him sitting on a long rope pole. The most important thing about rope perches for any bird is to wrap them with veterinary tape. They're fine when they're new, but as they wear out, especially if your bird chews on them, the threads will start to loosen. These threads can wrap around the toe, foot, or even neck, trapping the bird and causing injury or death. There have been many cases of birds ingesting rope fibers after chewing ropefish - this results in a costly vet bill as the fibers enter the bird's crop and require surgery or the bird dies. Wrapping your perch in veterinary wrap will protect your bird from these loose threads. If your bird loves to chew like my caique, veterinary wrap may not be enough and a rope perch may not be the best choice. However, for birds like my budgie who doesn't chew very much, it can be done very safely. Now let's move on to the quality of the rope rod. I used to have multiple rope poles. This brand seems to be of as good quality as any I have had. They were easy to install even if my hands weren't that strong. I like that they are flexible and will stand up to any shape you give them. They are difficult to clean, but if you wrap them in veterinary wrap, the veterinary wrap is a little easier to clean and you can just peel them off and wrap them again. when they get too dirty. Overall they seem quite durable and I expect them to last a long time.
