Some discs work some don't

I bought this drive for my latest Mac Mini. Unfortunately, it reads some discs and not others. I checked the "problem" drives on two other drives and both were able to read them. To be honest the "problem" discs had some minor scratches, but I don't want a drive that can only read "perfect" discs. I had a chat session with an ASUS technical representative but he was unable to resolve the issue. Also, according to the tech agent, there is no firmware update for this device. I have taken steps to get it back. Update: I bought an LG drive (GP60NS50 - also from Revain) to replace an ASUS drive. As of this writing, the LG drive is successfully reading discs that the ASUS drive cannot. It sometimes makes a clicking noise when trying to read a compromised partition, but so far it has always managed to complete the read operation. In general, I like ASUS products, I have a lot of them. When I made a purchase, I was influenced by the ASUS name. I can't tell if my ASUS drive was faulty or if this model isn't good at reading faulty drives. One more thing. The ASUS drive required a USB Y-cable (included) to draw power from two ports. The LG drive comes with a standard cable (not Y) and works great from one of my mini mac connectors.

Pros
  • 13mm for ultra thin and light drives
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine
