Review on AUTOTOOLHOME Centering Dowelling Locator Woodworking by Richard Counts

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Fast: yes, easy: yes, accurate: no

I bought this unit to center the swing arm, unlike the clamp types of other units I have. I also liked what I thought was a second set of holes between the three, but didn't look closely enough at the pictures to see it was a marker hole. The main problem with the accuracy of this device is that the pilot drills have many holes. slope for their intended size, and the thread travel is longer than the depth of the center bar. The sockets drawn into the rod are proud. This raises the centering rod onto the material and then reduces squareness. Loosen the guides and you will see the same effect as the guides are now floating. I had to mill the guides to solve this problem. Another issue is that the guides I've received are generally too small. The problem with this is that while the pin is the correct size for many holes, the holes are now in the wrong places; Pitch from hole to hole will accumulate, eventually resulting in the mating set of holes being completely out of alignment. I suspect I have metric guides as they are closer to the metric dimensions of the sister tool (red). I had to use a lathe to open them up for a 3/8" drill bit and dowels. And I'll most likely be going to cut two more holes and make another set of metric inserts. If I can't, but they're here on Revain, hint ,Note.Overall I bought it for the mechanism and the mechanism works great.
