I've used both brass and steel threaded inserts for installing hardware on wood products for a long time. I needed a reliable way to do this on my latest project, so I decided to give this tool a try. For really serious work I prefer to use stainless steel inserts, but these brass inserts will work for most projects. Here's what I did. I compared the threads on the outside of the inserts to some of the regular screws I had at home. They ended up being 5/16" to 18. I drilled my holes with the bit provided. I then used a 5/16" to 18 taper bolt tap to tap the holes. This made the insert inserts very easy to install with no insert breaks, filament stripping or other issues that can come with these things. Lubricating the threads with some paraffin also helps. It was the quickest and smoothest insert setup I've ever done.
