Dongle works great with VCDS Lite

For older VW and Audi models with KKL interface, not for newer CAN. This third party key works fine with the free VCDS Lite downloaded from Ross Tech website on my old Windows 7 Starter 32bit laptop. Read Ross Tech's clear online documentation on what vehicles will work with the legacy KKL interface and VCDS Lite, and what you can and cannot do with Lite Free or Lite Paid/Registered. You can do a lot anyway. Retrieve and clear most codes and monitor for example ATF temp during a change as I showed in my old u toob video "O1V ZF Tiptronic Transmission Fluid and Filter Change with Audi A4 Engine Oil Change". I have used a similar key on my old cars for years and loved what you can do with free VCDS Lite and a cheap key like this. Then I got machines that Lite could NOT run on. So I had to pay big bucks for a full VCDS and my own Ross Tech Key for my 2011 A3 TDI and 2009 TSI. Back then, I was lucky enough to be able to use their CAN-only dongle indefinitely (now discontinued). I gave away my old cheap key when I sold my 2001 A4 and then I didn't have a chance to help someone with the old KKL system where only CAN doesn't work. So I took it and it worked fine with VCDS Lite. Like all those cheap keys, it can feel a little flimsy, but it suits me. My cable is allowed to dangle in an oversized hole in the OBD II connector housing and you can see the circuit board and innards moving inside the transparent connector housing. However, I intentionally wobbled it with a bunch while connected to the car and laptop and it doesn't seem to affect the electrical connections at all. I'm glad this one works with at least Windows 7 as my last cheaper one only worked with XP! Having internet problems on an old laptop - after downloading VCDS Lite - I used the drivers on the disk that came with this dongle, but USB serial drivers ONLY, not their old pirated vcds version. If you don't want to use a drive at all, you can easily find the same USB-to-Serial FTDI-409.1 driver online, which will make your USB port work like a serial COM port with your dongle. Once you have installed the driver and the dongle is plugged into the USB port, go to Device Manager where you should now see a list of COM ports (showing an unknown USB device before installing the driver). Open this Ports section and select USB Serial Port COM#. In the pop-up window, select the "Port Settings" tab, the "Advanced" button and select an unused port between COM 1 and COM 4 - be sure to save/apply the selection and make a note of it for future use Using the dongle (and also note which of your physical USB ports you are using). Now, if possible, connect to your car's OBDII port with the key on (the heater will burn out, etc., but the car shouldn't work). Then open VCDS Lite, select Program Options and select the same COM number you just set in Device Manager. to make sure the drivers are working. However, if you are not connected to the device, "Interface: not found" is also displayed. This is normal, just remember to repeat this step when connecting so you can "apply" the COM setting in VCDS. ECU and check out Ross Tech's great online resources: VCDS Lite User Guide, Code Details and Forums to try all the free or registered features.
