Review on ๐Ÿ‘‰ Enhanced Performance with JUN-ELECTRON's Capacitive Raspberry 4 800X480 Touchscreen Portable 5"" Display by Mark Turner

Revainrating 4 out of 5

For what it is, it's a decent device.

I bought this because I needed a true HDMI display to play video on my Raspberry Pi and it was literally the only one I could get that didn't have months of lead time (except for one that was incorrectly labeled HDMI , but was actually based on I2C). I haven't used the touchscreen capabilities of this device and probably never will, at least in this application, so I can't comment on that aspect. Installation took a few minutes. . Basically, you first power the device from external power and then edit the /boot/config.txt file to enable 1 amp USB support. After that you can power it yourself (version 2 and higher, IIRC) via the USB port of the Raspberry Pi. At least on Pi version 4, you can power it from a single USB port, but it comes with a USB Y-cable to power it from a pair of USB 2.0 ports. Cons: * Limited support for HDMI modes. Notably, there's no support for 30fps modes - only 60fps. Other projects would have sent it back because of this, but it was fine for that * Limited resolution (800x480). I would have preferred the panel to be native 720p. But given the size, I think it's perfectly adequate. Luckily, it seems to support downscaling of 1080p content (which is good because I'm working right at the CPU's limit without rewriting my code with neon instructions). * The case does not fully cover the circuit board. (You can see this in the picture showing how to assemble it.) I didn't care because I didn't want to use the case part anyway (I mount the panel in a special project box), but it would be better if they used inserts to that would protect the circuits more fully.* The touch screen cable protrudes uncomfortably, making the case assembly difficult. With a quarter-inch bezel, you'd think they could figure out a way to cut out the circuit board and backlit screen a bit so they don't stick out as much (like they've done with all video cables). This is another reason I want this without a digitizer. But I digress. Anyway, it was an HDMI panel and it was available for shipping from the US warehouse without having to wait weeks for the boat from China, meaning it literally ticked the two criteria I had: ie two pluses. :-)
