For reference, I'm coming from an Evolve R2 standalone remote with a throttle and thumb brake that had horrible problems releasing, but excellent control resolution and rich data display during operation. What I thought was a bug in this remote's firmware is just a semantic difference: you want to know how many poles your motors have, not how many poles. I entered 14, which made the speed/distance appear half as realistic. Changing this parameter to 7 (par) solved the display problem, the speedometer and odo became accurate. The ampere meter is a very useful tool for getting maximum battery range. My only real criticism of this remote is that the (only) control, the thumbwheel, used for both acceleration and deceleration, is only read as an 8-bit value and only reads values between 63 and 200 (on a scale from 0 to 255). with a dead space of 15, which roughly corresponds to a 7-bit resolution. That's 1/4 the resolution of a 30 year old digital proportional remote control, which is pretty pathetic considering that even the crappiest Arduino's ADC resolution is 10 bits (0-1023). Despite the crippled wheel, it's easy to safely control the board with a very careful thumb. I've done 3 long trips with it in 3 days for a total of 63 miles with no passes. So while they cut stupid corners in the firmware, the end result is a remote that I trust. As the cheapest VESC-compatible remote with a handy telemetry display, I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone building or reinstalling their board. However, I will still try the Maytech remote with data display and separate throttle/brake controls.
