Review on CH Hanson 03060 Pivot Square by Daniel Ogbebor

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Useful but very poorly done.

This is an incredibly useful tool and it seems to do exactly what it's supposed to do. That's why there are two stars instead of one. However, it (or at least the one I got) is very poorly made. The product is riddled with stains indicating that the cutter, presumably the end mill, slipped and removed more metal than intended. One side of the fin with all the angle/pitch markings looks like someone literally hand grabbed it with an angle grinder. The rim of the hypotenuse is clearly "curled" and has removed what looks like a snipe you would get from a dick. The two parts don't quite fit together. As others have pointed out, the lock is almost useless. Seriously, doesn't CH Hanson do quality control? Is a tool used to wear them down? Are they handcrafted by an incompetent mechanic? All of the above? I know the production is outsourced, but come on, this is ridiculous. The horrible workmanship of this product would be unacceptable for even a cheap square from a major department store, let alone the $50+ Signature Series. (If it's the Signature Series, I shudder to think how awful their non-Signature instruments must be). I will definitely never buy a CH Hanson product again. Would return if I had the original packaging. Also, the patent for this product has expired. Hopefully we'll see turning angles from more competent manufacturers soon. EDIT: I sent it back for a replacement which is much better but still has visible manufacturing flaws. There is clearly no quality control on this product, or they just don't care. I think it's just crap about the fit and finish of any given device. Accordingly, I will not change my assessment. As mentioned above, this is actually very useful, which is why I'm reluctant to keep it and admit I paid too much. I also found photos of the original that I took, but only one of them adequately shows the error I was trying to fix.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dubious purchase for the elderly
