Review on πŸ”’ Dicor BT 1834 1 Butyl Seal Tape: Premium Waterproofing Solution for Reliable Sealing by Andrew Grant

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Butyl tape is easy to apply, easy to remove, and very forgiving.

I disassembled and rebuilt my 1972 camper van removing all side panels except for the studs and all fixings such as vents, windows and jack connections. . I used 14 rolls of this tape to put everything back together. What did you learn.1. For heaven's sake, don't use silicone to seal your camper. Once it collapses, nothing sticks to it and it's virtually impossible to completely remove it with anything other than a spoked wheel. 2. Conditions are favorable in terms of the operating temperature of butyl tape. If it's too warm, it sticks to everything, including your fingers. When it's warm and you roll it out for a long time, it easily sticks to itself before you can apply it to anything. If it's too cold it won't stick and it's hard to work with because it's so stiff. If you apply it on a cold day and then tighten what you want to seal, later when it gets warmer it will squash back up and you'll have to cut off the excess again. I often put rolls of duct tape in the fridge on a hot day and on the heater vent in the winter. I find it easiest to apply the tape to the object you intend to tape, not the surface you intend to mount it on. You should also dry the item you intend to tape first so you can identify any places where additional layers of tape may be needed. Especially on corrugated aluminum. In this case I apply the tape liberally to the cavities on the side of the mounting surface.4. Speaking of which, don't be afraid to use more than one layer of butyl tape. This tape is thin and you need to make sure the entire tape touches both surfaces and that you get a fair amount of squelch that you then go back and cut off. As said, the tape is much thinner than what is used in the RV factory. Count twice what you think you will need. It takes a lot of tape if your RV is corrugated aluminum, but not as much if it's flat-sided fiberglass. When it comes to pruning, give him some time to do his thing. At least overnight. Then choose a nice cool day or early morning to cut off the excess. It's easy to make nice clean cuts as nice as they came from the factory when the tape is nice and cool. Ideally, you would let freshly applied butyl tape heat up at least once and then cut it off after it cools. You want it to mash up as much as possible before slicing.
