Although I really like them because they are small enough to fit in a large yogurt container, I think they are assembled upside down. By simply pulling the pin on the hinge you can reverse the action to make them work properly (add water when low or add water when high). They tend to clog when the water is nutritious and the sun is shining on it or when there are solids in the water, but this is not unexpected. Cleaning involves removing and disassembling the pen, which is fairly easy.
