Review on 🔧 Derale 13090 Transmission Filter Kit: Enhance Performance and Prolong Transmission Lifespan by Muleme Bollinger

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best for your gearbox!

Installing one of these external spin-on filter kits in your automatic transmission cooling circuit may be the most valuable step you will ever take! The "micron rating" of internal filters in most (if not all) transmissions is terrible, ranging from 100 to 200 microns. These external filters are in the 21 micron range and will let through at least 7-9 gpm without restriction. These transmission filter kits are available under different brand names. Of the three I've used in the past, this Derale kit is by far the highest quality. Just so everyone knows, the filter itself is a very common size, readily available from your local auto parts store under a dozen different brand names, and for about half the price of a number 15092 Derale filter. (It's a Champ PH253 way btw) . Just pick your favorite filter brand and tell them you want an exact Champion PH253 replacement. OR BETTER, if you have room for a larger filter, just use gold number NAPA 1515, Ford FL1A, Fram PH8A or whatever you prefer. The performance of this filter is better than the smaller ones PLUS they have about 3 or 4 times the surface area of the filter media. And it's such a common number that it will probably cost half the price of a small filter. You get a superior filter for less money. And if you want truly superior filtration, choose a replacement filter with the same flow rate, bypass valve setting, etc., but much finer filtration in the 15, 10 or less range. (e.g. WIX 51307 or 57088 etc.) Next time you need to change your transmission oil and filter you will be so glad you have this set. It's almost as easy as changing your engine oil and filter. -Even without a drain plug on the gearbox, all you have to do is: 1. Remove the spin-on filter, place a drain pan under the mounting plate, start the engine and let it idle until the fluid stops flowing, stop the engine. 2. Measure how many liters have been drained, top up the gearbox with the same amount plus a little more for the filter. 3. Run the vehicle with the new filter and fluid changed until the transmission is fully warmed up, recheck the fluid level and adjust if necessary. I have performed this procedure on four different vehicles (all GM) for over 20 years. approximately every 20-25 thousand km. The gear oil always stays nice and clean, there is never any visible wear or deposits in the drain oil (all of which get trapped in the filter) and it gives me great peace of mind. I suspect that I will not have any gearbox problems with any car.

Pros
  • This is awesome
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
