Review on 🐠 Tetra Whisper EX: The Ultimate Silent Multi-Stage Power Filter for Aquariums by Ann Coleman

I have a hexagonal tank, tall and thin which means filters for the same size rectangular tank cannot circulate well in the lower half of the tank. I chose the EX 20 to get a higher flow rate. This device does an excellent job of both mechanical and biological filtration and now my entire aquarium spins much better. Also, it doesn't create too much current for my tiny oranda goldfish, which can be an issue with stronger filters as they tend to be poor swimmers. My only downside is that this thing can be LOUD, and I mean LOUD, unless it's positioned on the back of your tank that way. There is a small rubber nub on the bottom of the case that helps balance the back of the device against the back glass but also creates a vibration point. I ended up sticking a small piece of felt between the dome and the glass to reduce the noise and so far so good. I also placed a narrow strip of felt next to the top rim of the tank as the rim sometimes vibrated against the body. Overall the quality seems good/solid construction and it was very easy to set up and clean. UPDATE 01/15/2018: The filter has become unbearably loud even with my homemade silencers. The filter itself now makes a loud rumble that I can't fix. I've tried several times to disassemble and clean all the moving components and adjust the position on the tank but it doesn't help at all. There's something wrong with the head itself and it's gotten so loud that it gets in the way of watching TV in the living room and I hear it when I'm trying to sleep. I have disassembled it and visually everything is fine with the unit and I use a coarse gravel base that cannot be sucked into the filter to damage it. The Amazon return period has expired but I have signed up for the Tetra Guarantee and will be returning this item as soon as possible. Very disappointed that it has deteriorated so quickly.
