Have had all types of aquariums for 50 years. That may be a bit of an exaggeration but I have never had clearer water and the fish are much more lively. I have used old whisper filters over the years and they are very quiet and reliable for many years as opposed to Marineland which I replace after 2 years. This filter requires a sufficiently high water level in the pool. I would say the water level should be at least 1.5 inches from the top of your tank. The inlet has a small seam at the very top of the inlet tube which MUST be fully submerged in water or the pump will run dry. So if you're doing water changes or just keeping the water level down in your tank, this pump isn't for you. It is absolutely unsuitable for a turtle tank or the like. I've only been using it for a day but I love it. I received a 10 gallon filter to replace my Tetra Whisper 2-10i filter that was soaked in seaweed and beyond repair (I'm learning to make plants. PRO: This filter picks up moving objects in the aquarium quite well. The cartridges and water flow are well contained if you're careful to snap the top of the filter, which is easy to miss, BUT it's easy to do when you realize there are notches on the top of the filter. I have a hexagonal tank, tall and thin which means filters for the same size rectangular tank cannot circulate well in the lower half of the tank. I chose the EX 20 to get a higher flow rate.
