They were pretty easy to install but I think a set of installation instructions should have been included (which is why I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5). Luckily I read other reviews and researched how to install them. Turns out it's pretty easy - use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the metal clips, pop out the old shock and put in the new shock (I used a pole to open the trunk - don't forget that!). I agree with the other posts - shocks aren't that easy to compress by hand, but I found a trick. When I tried to install I noticed that the bar I was using to support the open trunk didn't fully extend the trunk. By inserting the lower ball seat, I pulled the trunk all the way out and was able to insert the upper ball seat without squashing the shock. The whole process took less than 10 minutes (a few minutes to find a solution to a compression issue). Once installed they work very well. Excellent value for money and quality. Now you just have to see how long they last. My stock shocks have lasted 8 years so I think I'm better off the last 2 years (than buying an $80 shock replacement at the store).
