Review on πŸ” Hillman Hardware Essentials 851838 Stainless Steel Gate Spring: Superior Self-Closing Function with Adjustable Tension - 12-Inch Length by Karen Lewis

Revainrating 4 out of 5

DOES NOT WORK AS RECOMMENDED

I bought 3 of these but I should have read the bad reviews. Like others This is one of the worst tech products I've had the misfortune to install. The spring has an adjustable nut at the top and a fixed nut at the bottom. Once the spring is screwed in, it must be preloaded to the desired tension by tightening the top nut, which is then held in place by a small metal plate that slides between the nut and the bracket. But as a previous reviewer pointed out, there's nothing stopping the "fixed" nut on the ground from rotating, which it does when the gate first opens. As a result, the preload is lost and the spring no longer closes the gate. The only solution is to find something that will keep the bottom nut from turning as the spring compresses further as the gate opens. I've found that inserting a pair of 5d finishing nails between the nut head and the bracket helps, at least temporarily. But honestly, what company would make a product that couldn't work the way it's marketed? I even went to the Hillman website and emailed me - NEVER RECEIVED ANY REPLY!
