Review on ๐Ÿ”Œ Unitek USB 3.0 to SATA III Adapter: Connect 2.5/3.5 Inch HDD/SSD and Optical Drives, UASP Support by Curtis Donjuan

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The power supply does not fully power the 3.5 inch hard drive.

This adapter draws power from the USB ports even when connected to a power supply. In a powered USB enclosure, you would expect the enclosure to power the entire drive, but that's not the case with this adapter. I found this out trying to build a NAS using a Raspberry Pi (whose USB port supplies a total current of 1.2A). With only the hard drive connected to 1 of the 4 USB ports, everything works fine. However, as soon as I connect other drives to the remaining USB ports, none of my drives are recognized by the operating system. I know this adapter is the problem because 1) using another self-powered hard drive enclosure fixed the problem and 2) when I plug other drives into the USB ports, the hard drive attached to the adapter starts whining (a sign of power failure). tl;dr: adapter does not deliver the full power 12V 2A; Don't rely on this adapter to fully power your hard drive.

Pros
  • Includes: 1 x USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive Adapter; 1x2.6ft data cable; 1 x 12V 2A power adapter
Cons
  • Requires power outlet
