The light is off when the device is off.
I used this to replace the old 1A USB plugs in my RV. It fits straight, just had to connect the wire. They glow when on, not when off. I measured a no-load current draw of 0.04 amps and didn't turn anything off. Works as advertised and charges my phone very quickly. I am very happy with the results.
