The protective pads were fairly easy to put on and hold. Unfortunately, the felt pads started falling off after a week or two. Another brand of floor mats we bought at a kitchen and bedroom store was similar to these but had thicker felt pads. They have worked well and lasted a few years but the felt pads are starting to wear out and this brand is no longer available in the size we need. So we tried these. The floor in our dining room is covered in large, smooth porcelain tiles that mimic wood floorboards, so stress on the underlay shouldn't be a bigger problem than it was on the old steps. Maybe the gaskets are too thin or the glue used to hold them in place isn't strong enough.
