Review on ๐Ÿ“š LeapFrog LeapPad Academy Learning Tablet: Revolutionizing Education for Kids by Tim Kallimanis

The best learning tablet!

This is one of my favorite educational toys. We've had LeapPads before, but this is a whole new level. The apps that come with it are great, but my preschooler really likes the Academy app. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that LeapFrog gave us a free 3 month trial of their Academy tablet app, but my toddler loved it so much I signed up for a year. (The annual price is VERY cheap, especially if you are homeschooled like us and used to buying an extremely expensive syllabus). 3 months free use of the Academy App. I contacted CS and they responded with very detailed instructions on how to get back to the step I missed. While waiting for her reply, I got impatient when my kids asked to use the new LeapPad which I just factory reset and rebooted. It only took me a few minutes to set it up and even less time for the kids to figure out how to use the tablet. It feels very durable and I like that the stylus is stored in a protective bumper. I wish I had 3 of these because my kids (4, 6 and 8) fight over this thing all the time! They all think they grew up with it because it's a real Android tablet that doesn't look like a cheap, bulky toy in a plastic case. I use it as a negotiation tool; Finish your lessons and homework and you can play LeapPad first. :-) Other homeschooling parents keep asking us what program to buy for their preschoolers. I always, always, always tell them to skip the expensive curriculum when the kids are that young and get them a LeapPad or other LeapFrog toy so they can play while they learn and inspire future school success. The thing is more than suitable for that. I deducted 1 star because the shatterproof screen is difficult to see from certain angles. You have to position it correctly to focus on what you see. This is a problem when several children try to look at the screen at the same time. Something is also wrong with the camera app. No matter how we rotate the screen, the image will be captured upside down. I'm sure this is an easy fix for the app developers but it's very frustrating for my little ones who love running around and taking pictures of literally everything. Finally, the headphone jack doesn't work with my toddler's Safe Volume headphones, but it does with my headphones. This can be a bit annoying for us parents who have to listen to every sound coming out of the tablet when the kids are playing. Overall, we all love the LeapPad Academy educational tablet and highly recommend it for educational games for all 3-8 year old kids. The product was provided free of charge by VTech/LeapFrog for me to try with my family; However, all thoughts and opinions are mine.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dubious purchase for the elderly
