I breed fancy gerbils that I keep in 10 gallon tanks. Typically, the Zoo-med cases I order are made of heavy-duty metal and wire mesh. These are plastic sidewalls with a mesh that is easy to cut or tear. The product description doesn't say it's made of plastic and not metal. So far the lids I've ordered have held up my gerbils but these animals are keen rodents so I don't think they will last for years like metal lids. Also, the price of the product is very high. Pet stores like Pet Place and Pet Mountain sell metal for about $8. PS - Since I don't have small children or other predators I threw away the locking devices which protect against things rather than critters. therefore I cannot comment on the installation. They are also made of plastic.
