Review on Hario Craft Coffee Clear Black by Kyle Smithlin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The paint is thinner than shown.

I bought this mainly to try the V60 filters (as opposed to the flat bottom Melita filters) for infusing coffee. I only wanted a cone filter but bought the whole pot because the price doesn't differ much. I've only used one cone so far and I really like it. I am sure that if this pandemic ever ends and we have guests again, I will love the pot when I use it to serve guests. . . V60 filters are comparable in price to Melitas filters, but I think they deflate a bit faster (if you pre-wet the filter paper) than Melita filters. I honestly can't say I feel a huge difference in taste. The cone and pot together are aesthetically pleasing, although in reality the pot is slightly smaller than it appears in the picture. I have an odd aesthetic affinity for Japanese-made devices, particularly the slightly unnatural colors and tints of their plastics. This product is no different. The red version looks true red in the photos on the Revain website, but the actual color is actually somewhere between red and tan tea. It's a slightly fancy color that's hard to describe, but I like it better than the true red shown on the web image. If you like the colors of Japanese kitchen plastics, you'll see what I mean. A big difference between V60 skittles and Melita 3 hole flat bottom skittles is how easy it is to clean the skittle after use. When you pour water from the kitchen into the Melita cone to clean it after use, the water sometimes splashes back at you because the water collects in three small holes in the bottom. The V60 has a large hole at the bottom of the filter to keep it from splashing and the water goes straight through. In that regard, I prefer the V60 cone because it cleans quickly and is completely spatter-free.
