Review on πŸš€ Motorola MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gig Cable Modem: Ideal for Xfinity Gigabit, Cox Gigablast, Spectrum & More! by Raymond Iglesias

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Reliable, affordable alternative to the ArrisSB8200 and Netgear CM1000

The Xfiniity compatible modem is easy to set up by following the quick start guide that came with it. Tip for Comcast/Xfinity subscribers - when going through the setup wizard, selecting the option to send an activation code is a joke - the code is only valid for 15 minutes, but it took me 30 minutes to get the text; just stick with your Xfinity account name for activation and initialization. Xfinity was updated to DOCSIS 3.1 and while my own 6 year old trusty Motorola Surfboard SB6580 worked perfectly, Xfinity found every reason to bother me with the update and how much I miss without a Modem Lease 3.1 update. I prefer to have my own modem, so after checking the Xfinity Approved Devices page for compatible modems for my region, I narrowed my choices to the ARRIS Surfboard SB8200, Netgear CM1000, and Motorola MB8600. All three are comparable with 1001 Mbps, 32 downlinks and 8 uplinks DOCSIS and DOCSIS 3.1. good reasons, it has great hardware specs. With 3GB RAM and 128MB/16NAND Flash, it's a treat. And if it weren't for the awful white box that doesn't go with everything in my apartment, I'd happily buy it. Vanity, I know your name is Monkey Rat. I've never particularly liked Netgear, and I found the hardware lacking - 128MB Flash and 256MB RAM. Ultimately, it won't be much of a turning point with current theoretical home speeds of around 1GB, but you'd expect a little more, well, more from a name like Netgear. Even if its versatility - which speaks for a cable modem - was really no reason for me to go this route. That conflicting white Arris looked tastier at this point. I then compared the MB8600 to both and found a happy spot. . 512MB RAM and 128MB NAN - a buck cheaper than Netgear with double the RAM and while not as expensive - marginally - as Arris and certainly a bit short on hardware, but I paid more for the future ability to connect more 4 separate lines. That said, LACP technology requires a more powerful end router, and speeds in excess of gigabytes won't necessarily be just around the corner, but this device is great for the future with its 4GB potential. Caveat - this is a big device. . If you are familiar with old surfboards, they easily double in height and have no mounting options. However, it has excellent ventilation thanks to the well-ventilated slat pattern on the side. How does it work? My internet plan is BLAST! 150 Mbit/s (stop laughing) - and I assure you I've never seen that, even in the middle of the night - the wired connection speed shows an increase on speedtest.net, but it's actually not that noticeable, whether it is directly connected to the ASUS RT-AC86U cable modem or router, laptop and desktop computer performance was negligible. However, the wireless performance for my nVidia SHIELD K1 tablet and Google Pixel 2 phone has been significantly improved - I found this a little strange as they still go through the router, but I can't dispute the results. I keep forgetting about the MB8600. There's a built-in spectrum analyzer utility that I need to try - I'll add an update when I do. The earth does not tremble and does not set the sky on fire. I watch movies from time to time and really have no complaints and can only praise the device for its amazing Wi-Fi boost, which I don't have a good explanation for. I can replace my Cat5e with Cat6 and upgrade my next router - hopefully get a few Mbps more. But really, I think it's time to call xfinity and run some linear tests. I will also provide updates on this.

Pros
  • Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Speed - The 2.5GB Ethernet port provides true high-speed connectivity for even the fastest routers and computers, delivering close to 2500 Mbps downstream and up to 800 Mbit/s upstream with the support of your Internet tariff.
Cons
  • Not the best
