Review on πŸ–₯️ Enhanced Supermicro CSE 826BE16 R920LPB Rackmount Server Chassis by Scott Kulothungan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

There's a reason Supermicro charges extra - it's the design (not the documentation). Absolutely worth buying.

WOW. What a great case. That's why you're paying for a Supermicro chassis, not a knockoff. But come to Supermicro. Hire someone to write a decent manual and write down the best specs. First about all right. Nowhere in the documentation does it say the 826 case supports anything other than EATX motherboards. It does. There are racks everywhere and I made good use of my Micro ATX Supermicro X9SCM-F board. The posts are double threaded nuts so you will need a 7mm wrench or socket to add or remove them. Some of them come pre-installed but can be moved and if you need them there is an additional pack. Using a Supermicro board is the way to go as all cables fit perfectly and no plug adapters are required. The kit includes board control cables if you use another brand. The backplane is difficult to reach - straight up. Using the 8087-8087 cable between my Adaptec 6805 card, it connected to the back with no problems. I bought a 1m cable, but 1/2m should reach the PCIe slots with no problem. Lots of space to get to the back. Power is connected to 1 of the 3 molexes and I connected the other two. There is no documentation on whether all 3 are needed or only for EL2 models with 2 extenders. Seems to work fine too. I bought an optional rear hard drive enclosure that works great. Be careful though, the screw on the side of the bracket (shown in the instructions) is almost impossible to reach. I ended up using a short Phillips nozzle and my fingers to push it in there. terrible design - you must come from the outside, not the inside. The air baffle has no guides, but there are tear-off tabs throughout that can be adjusted to suit your layout. If you use the rear hard drive cage, a large chunk should come loose. More parts will detach from other parts, not easy to break off. I recommend a dremel as I just don't think the studs are going to break easily. Plus, it comes with full-size splints, so you don't have to order extra. Recommend the case to anyone with a Supermicro (or real) motherboard and a need for 2U of storage!
