External SSDs are very popular these days. It's always better to have a solid state. Not only is it faster, but you don't have to worry about dealing with mechanical drives. SSD drives boot much faster. Check out my photos first to get an idea of what's included on the disc. You will get both 18 inch USB-C to USB-C cables and USB-C to USB-A cables. A guide book that appears to be filled with outdated information. It also includes a vinyl sleeve. The disc comes in Mac OS Extended Journaled format; However, starting with High Sierra, Apple introduced the APFS format, which is more suitable for SSD drives as it is optimized for it. Pretty much everything about it is better than the old HFS+. The only downside is that it's not backwards compatible with anything pre-High Sierra and isn't readable on Windows unless you install third-party software. You also cannot create Time Machine backups on APFS formatted drives. Since I didn't need to do those things, I reformatted mine to APFS. What immediately catches the eye is the low quality and finish of the disc. I mean it works as advertised, but it's immediately obvious that they've used the cheapest materials. For example, white plastic is thin and opaque. The bright blue LED that shows data transfer activity actually seeps through the plastic, not just through a hole. I wouldn't mind if they were the cheapest in their class, but they aren't. It costs more than, say, the Samsung T5, which is smaller, looks better and is just as fast. Speaking of size, this drive is almost the same size as an old Seagate external hard drive I had years ago. SSD drives should be much smaller. T5 is almost half the size of this thing. In terms of performance, I have to give good grades. It's incredibly fast. I run my virtual machines with it without any problems. It feels like I'm running it from my local SSD drive. And the disc never gets hotter than warm, even after hours of hard work. I think that could be a positive outcome of such a large drive enclosure? The aluminum surface acts as a heat sink and cools the drive.
