WARNING: Nuts can work loose while driving.

When I looked at this product I was blown away by the cost of the 2 rack set of accessories and the amazing reviews. I ordered this item in the first week of May 2021. Buyers should be aware that as another reviewer mentioned, the nuts used to attach the uprights to the crossbars can become loose during shipping. They are not locknuts and certainly should be. My first use of these racks was to transport a pair of new 12 foot sit on kayaks to my house from a local dealer. This short ride of about 20 miles with some overland driving went smoothly. The second time around, I took a 12-inch seat kayak and an Aqualilly floating pad while relaxing on a lake about 500 miles from home. The journey to the destination was largely uneventful. I made it a habit to make sure everyone was safe at every stop we made. There were no serious issues, just minor tweaks to the blue ties securing both items. On the way back, about 400 miles from home, the rear strut holding my kayak broke off. The strut was able to slide back and forth on the cross member and eventually the nut came off completely while running at 65-70 mph. I heard the skid of the rack and immediately started to slow down as I watched the big black nut fly off and bounce off the road, almost hitting the car behind me. I also think that somehow one of the blue straps came loose from the kayak's footboard as it was gone when we got home. I was able to re-tighten all the remaining nuts, moved the nut from the lillypad to the kayak holder, and adjusted the blue straps to hold the lillypad as securely as possible without the fourth nut. I didn't think about photographing problems in the middle of everything I want. We continued on our way home, stopping about every hour to check and reattach everything on the roof. Unfortunately, the return period for this item has already expired. I have contacted Mrhardware for replacement parts but am not very hopeful of a positive outcome. I'll disassemble the rack, take the bolt to a hardware store, and try to find locking nuts to replace the nuts the seller provided.

Pros
  • Great fit for me
Cons
  • Hard to say
