After struggling to use my internal DVD burner on my desktop, I needed a way to burn and read a disc. So why not replace the internal DVD burner, you ask. There's really nothing wrong with that, here's why. It's a long complicated story. Without mentioning that, let's talk about the burner. It only needs a USB slot if your USB slot can supply enough power, which mine does. Portable devices with 2 USB ports, one connected to the other, are for the rare occasions when that device needs it, doesn't mean you need it all the time. I would have liked the USB cable to be a bit longer. It's only about 2 meters long. Mini USB at the end of the device. Moving on, the tray will be used instead of the loaded slot. I've never been particularly interested in slot-loading devices. The compartment is the same as a laptop with the drive snapping into the compartment which is understandable it's so thin. The write times match what my internal burner would do: 4.3GB in about 10 minutes, just over 20 minutes if I add a verification step, which is a good idea in most cases. Anyone looking to purchase this for the intention of using it as a DVD player for your TV; NOT! It's not designed for that. It is designed to be used with a computer, not a TV. Yes I'm sure it will work with some TVs but that doesn't mean it will work with all. If you need a mini DVD player for your TV, look for one that's designed for it. The LG website lists this as "connecting to a TV" which is a bit misleading as it's just a USB device. I'm sure it works fine on most LG TVs, but I can't get to the ports on my old LG LCD TV to see if it works with it. It doesn't work on my Samsung, but it's not the recorder, it's the TV itself. My point is, don't shoot stars just because they don't work on your TV. I also wish people would stop giving bad reviews about "install CD" and "can't find driver". for it." There are no drivers for this device! It's just plug and play. The "Installation CD" is for installing the fully optional free Cyberlink software. If you are having trouble getting this up and running it's not because there are no drivers. Even since Windows95 I haven't seen a single optical drive that required drivers, except for USB. If you're using Mac, Linux, or Windows XP and newer then it's just plug and play -Play.Speaking of Cyberlink software I've seen people deducting stars because of this.Cyberlink software is provided for people who need it.If for some reason you can't get the software to work, file a complaint with them the product, not additional software.
