Review on 🌧️ Altura Photo Professional Camera Rain Cover: Rain Gear for Canon Nikon Sony DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras by Matt Crawford

A must when shooting in the rain

I photograph youth football. I'm there with the children in any weather, even when it rains. Although my camera and lens are weatherproof (Canon 80D with 70-200mm f/2.8), I don't want to risk it. My friend recommended the Altura raincoat to me and I bought it. I've seen photographers shoot with plastic trash bags wrapped/taped around their cameras and lenses. I've seen large, bulky, blanket-like contraptions covering their gear. I didn't want that. I needed something lightweight, easy to use and unobtrusive. I scroll through the video sometimes - and I need to be able to see the LCD screen and be able to get to the buttons and zoom ring quickly and easily. I can do anything with the Altura raincoat. Pros: The case is long enough to protect my 70-200mm lens with the lens hood on. On the inside of the cap where it meets the hood is a rubberized grip material. There is also a Velcro closure on the outside of the cap. As soon as you slip your camera and telephoto lens into this thing, it "holds on" and forms a water barrier around the lens hood. Pretty cool. There are left and right "sleeves" to put my hands in so I can work with the lens adjustment buttons and zoom ring. There are also adjustable cords at the ends of the "sleeves" if needed so I can secure them around my wrists and prevent water from getting in that way. There is a zipper on the underside of the cover. Leaving it open allows you to mount the camera on a tripod (which I do). The entire back of the lid is flexible, clear plastic, which allows me to see the LCD screen, buttons, etc. Although not very convenient, I can also see through the plastic into the viewfinder. Cons: Raincover doesn't leak. I put my Rode video mic (or more) in the hot shoe on top of my setup. Looking through the viewfinder is possible, but uncomfortable - and probably not what the manufacturer thinks we're going to start with. However, Live View shooting is possible. Once you get your hand in the cap, you don't have much leeway to fiddle with the zoom ring on your lens or the buttons and dials on your camera. In sport shooting I need to be able to control the camera quickly and in this case I had to relearn what I can and can't do and how fast I can do it. Love it (I live in the Seattle area) and think you might want to be shooting in the rain and protect your camera gear while doing so, this rain jacket won't break the bank and has some nice features. Inside. It folds up and doesn't clutter up in your camera bag. I even forget he's there most of the time. But I'm sure glad I have it when it starts raining! Overall, I recommend the Altura raincoat.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
