I use this on my RRS BH-55 ball head. That works great. I mostly use the BH-55, but once in a while I needed a gimbal head. With this device I can attach the gimbal head to the tripod very quickly and remove it just as quickly. The weight of the device requires a professional ball head for efficient use. It is very well made and you can tell by the weight. The operation is very smooth. The lock is positive and when locked there is no movement or creep. It's smoother than my RRS Pano Gimbal. One issue to be aware of is that when using RRS plates on your lens, the locking screws on the underside of the plate are not long enough to prevent the lens from slipping off the clamp. That's very unsafe. You can turn the screws on the RRS plate to make them longer during use, but they will loosen and you must remember to tighten them again or they will loosen and be lost. Guess how I know that. Or you can add longer screws to the plate, but this will make the plate less flexible on the RRS clamps. The problem seems to be that the GT1 clamp is fully machined and doesn't have a raised edge in the center to grip. security screw. I'll call ProMedia to see if they have a solution (see my update). I don't have other brands of plates to see if they have the same issues. A nice feature of the GT1 is that it can be mounted in the head both vertically and horizontally. Which gives you flexibility. All in all, this is a very reliable tool. Anyone looking for a gimbal head should check out this one or its big brother the full gimbal which I assume is similar in proformance. It's not cheap and you can probably buy 2 all-Chinese stabilizers for the price of one, but it's made in the USA and from my brief experience with heavy use it will last quite a few times. Hope that helps. Update: 11/20/2012 I've been calling the company about problems with RRS numbers for the last week or so. A real person (Tom) answers the phone. After a few minutes of very pleasant conversation, Tom understood my problem and said he would look for a solution. A few days later he called me as he promised and said they had a solution and it was already on its way to me. As we chatted, he continued to tell me how useful this monopod stabilizer is. You can mount the stabilizer on a non-ball head monopod and use it as a very stable and convenient monopod head. This gimbal has a 1/4 20 threaded socket at the bottom, so you can screw it directly onto the monopod. Took my Nikon 200-400 and monopod with this head on a hike this weekend, what a treat to use. All the advantages of a gimbal in a very practical package without compromising freedom of movement. By the way, the solution works like clockwork and the RRS plates are now fully compatible with this gimbal. I am very encouraged by this experience. Thank you Tom and team. mike,
