Review on DuoSharp B8250 DMT Bench with DuoBase by Joseph Scalea

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Stable base for heavy duty sharpening

I use this base to hold 4" DMT whetstones and to sharpen chisels and planes. These heavy objects can move through the loose sanding system. Also, DMT stones are used when wet making the table top slippery unless you are much more careful than me. I was very happy with the plastic base. It never moved even when placed on a wet mold. The increased height allowed me to run the tool along the edge and level the back of the chisel without catching my fingers on the table surface. Eight rubber discs are placed on plastic legs. Sounds lame, but it isn't. I would recommend gluing on the rubber feet at some point so they don't get lost. It also allows you to store the diamond plate without scratching other surfaces or damaging the bottom of the plate. The diamond stone comes with a non-slip backing, but it won't hold a sheet of float glass in place unless the table surface is perfectly flat (and in most cases it isn't). The main disadvantage of the holder is that the stone cannot be easily turned over. One plastic end must be removed and then reinserted. Maybe a 15 second job, but using both sides in a row is impractical. I wish I had bought a Coarse/Fine combo instead of Fine/X-Fine. money well spent.

Pros
  • Provides 2" pivot spacing for easy handling
Cons
  • A newer model could have been chosen
