The Alienware 13 R3 supports multiple external monitor ports: HDMI, Mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C). HDMI works great but is typically limited to 3840 x 2160 at 30Hz. I bought a MiniDP cable and was able to run 4K at 60Hz, but YouTube full screen videos in 4K were a bit slow. I've been hearing good things about Thunderbolt from my Mac friends, so I decided to give it a try by purchasing a pluggable USB-C to DisplayPort adapter cable. I've heard a lot about the Plugable service and figured if I needed any help they would be ready and willing to help. I'm happy to report that the Alienware 13 R3 works *perfectly* with the Plugable Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to DisplayPort adapter cable. As soon as I plugged it into the Thunderbolt 3 port on the back of the laptop, the 4K monitor was recognized and presented a beautifully crisp extended screen. Full-screen 4K YouTube videos play smoothly with low CPU or GPU load. I can't explain it, but the Alienware 13 laptop seems to stream 4K video over Thunderbolt more efficiently than the built-in MiniDP port. The plug-in cable is a bit stiff compared to other DisplayPort cables, but otherwise works great. Highly recommended!
