I have a wifi router upstairs and a desktop in the basement and with a usb adapter it works with 2-3 tracks but without reason interrupts the connection and refuses reconnecting until the desktop reloads. Tried 3 different USB adapters and finally bought this one. Ideally, no drivers need to be installed manually, Windows 8.1 loads the adapter with a built-in driver, and Windows Update then pushes the updated driver. And for 10 days no drop, almost constant 5 bars. It's amazing. Much more than I expected. The obvious guess is that having an external antenna mounted above the table will help get a clearer signal than either of the built-in antennas on any of the USB adapters. I also like the fact that this adapter is built on top of a generic PCI-e 1x Mini PCI-E adapter bracket that the N6205 wireless adapter plugs into. So if you decide to upgrade to 802.11ac (e.g. Intel Network 7260.HMWG) or a different wireless adapter, you can reuse this mount. and using the N6205 adapter in an old laptop or something.
