I don't know how accurate the readings are because I don't have a good quality gauge to reference. However, it works great for pulling the spokes against each other. Where the dial is in contact with the aluminum plate there is resistance. If I lubricate the area where it rubs, my tension is much less than if I use it as is. So don't trust the numbers, just try to get an acceptably high spoke tension, and then use that to ensure there is enough tension for each side of the wheel. Also, the way you hold it as you go from needle to needle is a little awkward, but you get used to it quickly.
