They're beautiful, durable, and heavy enough not to bounce while you work. The curved groove through which the yarn runs is smooth. smooth! Certainly no catch! I bought two of these boxes. I am crocheting a cream and light gray gingham blanket. The pattern requires you to work with two separate balls of yarn and take one color with you as you crochet (until you switch colors), so you'll need two boxes!
